Rockstar and queer icon St. Vincent, (aka Annie Clark) is a shapeshifter. Every new album she introduces new characters to the world. Don’t you dare call her a chameleon. She never blends in.
On Saturday, St. Vincent burned down the SNL stage. Both of her performances were fire. The first of which was the first single, “Pay You Way in Pain”, from Daddy’s Home which drops May 14th. She introduced the television audience to her new daddy character. Dressed head to toe in a Gucci leisure suit that said I wear the pants pal. For those slow on the uptake, she ended the song by turning her back to the audience and pointing to the “Daddy” stitched into her jacket.
The second was the psychedelically, mournful “Melting of the Sun”. Daddy was seemingly gone replaced by a smokey-eyed after-after-party diva. This song, she told Rolling Stone, is a love letter to brilliant female artists who pushed against adversity. Ensconced in a giant faux fur shawl, she lounged in platforms, evening dress, and pearls. She petted her guitar like a cat. That is until she stood to shred.
